• LE GRAVES DE LA CUVÉE SPÉCIALE N°5 : UN PASSÉ RELIGIEUX

    Le cru de la 5ème cuvée spéciale Mtonvin est un Graves du vignoble de Portets — « origine du Bordeaux » remarquent fièrement les vignerons entre Bordeaux et Langon — dont les galets, graviers et cailloux des bords de Garonne conservent la chaleur du soleil la nuit, conférant aux vins du secteur intensité, suavité et caractère. Il s’agit du Château Trébiac, produit par le Château Crabitey jadis tenu par des sœurs Franciscaines.

    Comme au nord des Graves le vignoble de La Solitude, en appellation Pessac-Léognan, le Château Crabitey àPortets a été un vignoble tenu par des religieuses, des « sœurs agricoles » franciscaines. En 1872, elles avaient fondé l’orphelinat de la Société des Providences Agricoles et la Culture de la Vigne. Le vin était rapidement devenu une ressource essentielle à la vie de la communauté.

    priez pour nousclocherAujourd’hui leur culture religieuse paraît subsister (photos) notamment au travers des valeurs qu’elles ont léguées — recueillement, générosité, goût de la belle ouvrage.

     

    Selon la famille de Butler ces valeurs sont toujours palpables dans la manière d’élaborer le vin des châteaux Crabitey et Trébiac.

  • FRENCH PRODUCERS UPSET

    French producers are upset over wew warning regulation for pregnant women.

    Although most studies have shown that pregnant women can have 1-4 glasses of wine a week and in Italy the practice is followed religiously with no significant defects in the new-borns, the latest law forcing the producers to double the size of the pictograph warning on the back label of the bottle has caused a lot of resentment among producers who feel this is a half-baked measure and the government should focus on educating women about the importance of moderation drinking

    Producers are required since 2007 to print a health warning for pregnant women on the back of wine bottles as a written warning or a logo showing the silhouette of a pregnant woman drinking from a glass inside a no drinking red symbol.  Measures were announced last month to increase the size of this pictograph to at least 1 cm. from the existing half a centimetre.

    According to a report published by the inter-ministerial committee, alcohol consumption in France during pregnancy is the leading cause of non-genetic mental disabilities in children, with 0.1% of the infants born having foetal alcohol syndrome.  The committee felt that the warning is drowned out by other required information on labels.  The Ministry of Health hopes to enforce the new size requirements within 2017.

    After pining over beautiful, but alas, fictional wine labels, we turn our attention to some actual architectural stunners you’ll find around the wine world. From monstrous cellars to postmodern wineries, we survey some our favorite examples of truly stunning architecture. And wine angels. One cannot overlook the wine angels!

    Many of the projects below were designed by famous architects, including all of the Spanish wineries we highlighted. Others, like the pair of Moldovan wine cellars, show up on account of their scale — not-so-miniature subterranean wine cities.

    Milestii Mici’s Wine Cellar
    Certified by the Guinness Book Of World Records as the world’s largest wine cellar (now at over 2 million bottles), you need a car to get around the 120 miles of underground tunnels in this Moldovan ‘wine city.’ Established in 1969, the cellar repurposed a massive, ancient tunnel complex, which had been carved out of soft limestone centuries earlier.

  • LA CUVÉE SPÉCIALE ‘MTONVIN’ N°5 DISPONIBLE EN AVRIL

    2017 va être une année de cuvée spéciale Mmmm… ton vin!, la 5ème, celle d’un cru bordelais 2015 — enfin un grand millésime après quatre années moyennes.
    Le vin sélectionné est un graves du vignoble historique de Portets entre Bordeaux et Langon, « origine du Bordeaux », dont le sol de galets et graviers des bords de Garonne conserve la chaleur du soleil le soir, et procure aux vins du secteur une intensité et une suavité caractéristiques.

    vin Château TrébiacLe Graves rouge 2015 de cette 5ème cuvée spéciale Mtonvin est celui du Château Trébiac, un vignoble de 12 hectares à Portets.

    Trébiac est l’ « autre » vin de Château Crabitey (prononcer teille), en plus souple et moins tannique (70% merlot, 30 % cabernet-sauvignon), à la matière ample dont les arômes de fruits rouges et noirs vont se déployer avec le temps. Ce cru toujours équilibré est l’un des plus soignés du plateau de Portets.

    Le goût bordelais classique, qui convient à bien des situations.

    Nos dégustations successives confirment que le Trébiac 2015 sera pratiquement prêt à boire dès la livraison prévue fin avril prochain, et que sa solide constitution lui assurera de la garde jusqu’en 2020-22.

    L’offre spéciale dont son propriétaire, Arnaud de Butler, fait bénéficier les amateurs de notre groupe ‘Mtonvin’ pour un achat minimum de 9 000 bouteilles, est très inférieure au prix moyen caviste (pas de distribution en GD).

  • WINE’S CHINA SYNDROME

    Robert JosephWe are living at the tail end of the American century. 

    Whatever President-elect Trump might like to claim, the mantle is passing to China. 

    A century ago, the US’s population and greater wealth gave it two key advantages, which it used to influence the way citizens of other countries lived their lives – from production-line manufacturing to supermarket shopping, fast-food consumption, to advertising and popular culture. 

    It was not a French or British wine critic whose 100-point scale became the international default, for example.

    But the US is like an ageing monarch seeing its power slip.  Even if China’s economic growth stalls, America will, over the longer term, continue to lose ground. China’s influence is already palpable. Hollywood producers now think about how their movies will play in Pudong as well as Peoria, and Facebook freely admits that it wants to offer a retail service that’s as sophisticated as its Chinese rival WeChat.

    Of course the influencing process works both ways. Chinese diners will adopt Western cutlery before Americans and Britons switch to chopsticks, and there will be a greater readiness to learn English in China than the reverse. But just as British parents have watched their offspring adopt Halloween and the school prom, the Western wine industry will soon be learning some lessons from China. (suite…)
